GEEF provides leadership programs to empower students with the skills to make positive choices, gain self-confidence and learn skills that are critical to their lifelong development. These programs can also help youth understand how effective communication and peer support can enhance individual and group decision-making, the development of trust, and positive risk-taking. An important aspect of the Youth Leadership Academy is each student developing a personal plan that outlines their necessary steps in achieving their post secondary dreams!
 

Students who attend the overnight leadership retreat become SMILE Alumni and attend additional leadership retreats during the school year.  Leadership retreats have been hosted at Harford Community College, Annapolis State House and a mock trial at the Harford County Courthouse.  The SMILE alumni had the opportunity to engage in college life by touring the campus, participating in classroom learning and at the end of the day played “I’m Smarter than a College Student.”  The second retreat was a trip to Annapolis where the students toured the State House and visited the Senate Chambers and Legislative Sessions.  Additionally, Judge Waldron facilitated a mock trial which include a visit with State’s Attorney Joseph Cassilly and Sheriff Jesse Bane.

The SMILE Youth Leadership Academy is a three day, two night comprehensive leadership experience for students attending Edgewood Middle School.  The Youth Leadership Academy will be held at Harford Glen from July 19 - 21, 2010.

Registration open for students attending grades 7, 8, and 9 at Edgewood Middle and Edgewood High School for the 2010-2011 school year.
